Tax

The ATT tax qualification explained

6 min read · updated 2026-09-20

What ATT is, how it leads towards CTA, who it suits and how the papers are structured.

What ATT is

ATT is the Association of Taxation Technicians. Its qualification is the recognised entry-level credential for people who work in tax compliance in the UK, and it is awarded by ATT itself after you pass its written papers and computer-based modules.

ATT is closely associated with the Chartered Institute of Taxation, and many people treat ATT as the stepping stone towards CTA, the chartered tax qualification.

Who it suits

It suits people already doing tax returns in practice, accountants who want a tax specialism, and career changers who would rather go deep in one technical area than broad across accounting.

If you are choosing between AAT and ATT: AAT teaches you accounts with some tax, ATT teaches you tax properly. People in a tax department usually get more from ATT.

How the papers are structured

You sit core tax papers plus optional papers matching the work you do, together with short computer-based modules covering law, professional responsibilities and ethics, and accounting principles. ATT publishes the current paper list, entry rules and fees on its own website, and the tax rules examined change with each Finance Act, so always study to the correct exam year.

How to prepare

Tax exams reward precision and speed. You need the rules at your fingertips and a reliable computation layout that you do not have to invent under pressure.

  • Learn each computation as a fixed layout, then fill it with the scenario's numbers.
  • Practise to time from the start; tax papers are rarely lost on knowledge, usually on minutes.
  • Keep a one-page sheet per tax of the rates, thresholds and reliefs you keep forgetting.
  • Re-do the questions you got wrong, not the ones you enjoyed.

What we are building

Mai Studies is building a tax portfolio alongside its AAT and ACCA programmes, taught in the same way: full written lectures, worked computations, explained question banks and timed mock papers. We are an independent tuition provider and are not ATT or CIOT.

Common questions

Is ATT easier than CTA?
ATT is the earlier qualification and covers compliance; CTA is the chartered level and is considerably harder and more advisory.
Do I need AAT before ATT?
No. ATT sets its own entry requirements and does not require AAT, though accounting knowledge helps.
Does Mai Studies award ATT?
No. ATT awards its own qualification. We teach the subject and issue our own completion certificate, which is not an accredited award.
