Bookkeeping

Bookkeeping courses taught in real software, not slides.

You learn the work by doing it: a fresh fictional business is generated for you, and you post its invoices, bank items, credit notes and judgement calls into your own bookkeeping software. Every module carries twelve explained questions and a marked assignment, and every programme ends with timed papers.

What you will be able to do

  • Double entry until it is automatic — day books, ledgers, control accounts and the trial balance
  • VAT: what is in scope, how returns are built, common errors and how to correct them
  • Payroll basics and the entries that follow into the ledger
  • Month end: accruals, prepayments, reconciliations and a clean set of working papers
  • Reading the numbers back to a business owner in plain language

The programmes

  • Practical bookkeeping in Luca

Set up a business, post a full period, reconcile and report.

  • Accounts production in AccountsGear

Take a trial balance through to a finished set of accounts.

  • Practical payroll and VAT

Run a payroll period and build a VAT return you can defend.

  • Practice workflow end to end

Onboarding, records, review and filing — the way a practice works.

  • AI automation in the finance workflow

Where automation genuinely saves time, and where it must not.

You buy your own basic subscription to the software you practise in. Mai Studies is an independent tuition provider and is not connected to those software companies; we write the material and teach it.

Where bookkeeping takes you

Bookkeeping is the foundation under every accounting qualification. Once it is solid, the qualification route you choose is a matter of where you want to end up.
