The financial management function

Objectives of the business, the conflict between stakeholders, and the three core financial decisions.

Working capital management

The cash operating cycle, inventory and receivable policy, and choosing between aggressive and conservative funding.

Investment appraisal

Payback, accounting rate of return, net present value and internal rate of return, with relevant cash flows.

Sources of finance

Short and long term finance, equity and debt, leasing, and what suits which business at which stage.

Cost of capital and gearing

Cost of equity and debt, weighted average cost of capital, and the effect of gearing on risk and value.

Business valuation

Valuing a business on asset, earnings and cash flow bases, and judging which basis a negotiation should start from.

Risk management: currency and interest rate

Translation, transaction and economic exposure, forward contracts, money market hedges, futures, options, swaps and forward rate agreements.
